March 24, 2014 (Kenova, WV) West Virginia-based singer/songwriter Karen Spurlock, who is currently promoting her new EP, My Heart’s Desire, has raised more than twice her goal during the month of February in the entertainer’s support of LOVE146. Spurlock, who set a goal to raise $300 by baking and selling cookies, cupcakes and cake pops, has donated more than $700 to the human trafficking prevention non-profit.
“After reading a suggestion to have a bake sale to raise money, I came up with the idea to take orders for an assortment of baked desserts from people in my community for Valentine’s Day,” said Spurlock.
After gathering orders, Spurlock and her friends spent time baking the requested items, as well as extras to sell at the singer’s church.
The final tally, which also included donations from fans, exceeded $700.
“I am thankful to my community and friends for donating time and money to LOVE146,” she said. “A team of people came together to give to an incredible movement. I am hopeful for a day when human trafficking no longer exists and we can look back and know we played a small part in the big picture.”
Because of the success of the February baking fund-raiser, Spurlock is looking for other ways to help raise funds and awareness of LOVE146 in the future, such as organizing a 5K run or having a dance-off.
“My dad and I are hoping to plan a 5K to raise funds for LOVE146,” Spurlock said, adding that she and her father are already working out in preparation for the event. “Planning a 5K is motivating both of us to stay active.
“The neat thing about Love146,” Spurlock said, “is the organization strongly encourages you to use your own unique passions to raise funds.”
Spurlock says she is committed to continuing to raise awareness of LOVE146 at her concerts and through other events.
“Freedom looks different for everyone, but we all desire it”, she said. “It’s admirable that LOVE146 helps survivors fight for freedom.”
